Minibeast of the month – May

May’s minibeast will be voted for during our video chat with our Italian partner school in Macerata next Friday but in the meantime here are two worthy candidates spotted in the school garden: the yellow haired sun fly (not it’s not a bee or a wasp!) which is a type of hoverfly and the broad bodied chaser which is a common form of dragonfly.

Do you know which categories they belong to: decomposer, pest controller or pollinator (answer below)?

ANSWER: Hoverflies are pollinators are pest controllers (especially of aphids) and pollinators; dragonflies are pest controllers (they eat mosquitoes).
