Plant your pants update

29th June is International Mud Day so this week seemed a good time for the Eco Committee to dig up the pants planted in the digging space in April for the Country Trust Plant Your Pants initiative.

They now look a little different: almost transparent in places with plenty of small holes indicating the presence in the soil of a host of decomposers: micro-organisms, bacteria and invertebrates such as centipedes, earthworms and earwigs.

This is a sign of healthy soil and shows that there is a wealth of creatures living underground that we do not usually notice.
